Those Steps Add Up: Indoor Walking Routes at the Resort

There’s nothing like taking a stroll outside when springtime arrives here.

But hey, even when we’re under winter’s icy rule this time of year, it’s always sunny and 70 indoors at French Lick Resort. (With plenty of active indoor activities nearby the resort as well.)

You can cover some serious ground here without ever setting foot outside. How much, exactly? We set foot around the resort to find out. And this is just covering the public areas of the hotels — taking a spin up, down and around the long guestroom floors at the hotels will certainly take your distance ever higher.

Indoor Fitness Walk
Did you know our resort fitness classes are offered free to hotel guests? You can catch one of them Wednesday, Thursday or Friday mornings in January and February. One of them is the Indoor Fitness Walk (which starts at 10 a.m. each of these days) where you can get your daily stroll in early while also taking in some of French Lick Springs Hotel’s sights. Win-win.

The exact route and length vary on each walk, but you can expect to cover just about every corner of the public areas within French Lick Springs Hotel and the Event Center. Generally, you can expect to cover 2,000-2,500 steps and one mile or a little more as our Resort Fitness Coordinator leads each walk. This is also the perfect way to see more of the hotel if you don’t have time for the historical walking tour of the hotel. (Which is also a great way to get those steps in.)

’Round and ’round at West Baden
Don’t worry, we won’t make you recall that 2πr formula to calculate the length around the outer circular hallway at West Baden Springs Hotel. We’ll just tell you that it’s .15 of a mile around, or about 380 steps. You can crank out a quick mile doing the loop seven times.

And as long as we’re counting, there’s a total of 63 historic hotel photos along the walls of the outer corridor, too. So you might want to build in some detour time to take a closer look at some of the hotel’s fascinating snapshots from its original heyday and restoration period.

Pluto’s Pizzeria to Casino Sportsbook
If you’ve ever scarfed down a slice of deep dish pie at Pluto’s Pizzeria then headed over to the sportsbook at French Lick Casino to chase it with a beer, you can at least claim you’re offsetting it with a mini workout.

The Event Center is made for walkin', whether it's
completing a lap or two or just passing through to
some of the indoor walking spaces at French Lick
Springs Hotel.
This is pretty much the greatest distance Point A to Point B you can cover at the resort without retracing your steps, and it all adds up to about .35 of a mile, or 855 steps. And you stay indoors the entire way: From Pluto’s Alley at the very south end of French Lick Springs Hotel, head up to the hotel lobby (no cheating — take the stairs instead of the elevator), through the upper level of the Event Center and down to the casino. (Catch the stairs just before the entrance to the casino pedway.)

Event Center loop
Even if you stay within the Event Center for a mini stroll, those steps add up. Just one full loop around both the upper and lower levels of the Event Center will get you to .37 of a mile or nearly 900 steps, if you branch off all the way down and back the Hoosier Hallway on the upper level and take the stairs between floors. If you’ve ever attended a meeting or event there and spent a day or two roaming some of those lengthy corridors, you’d be surprised how much ground you cover.
