The countdown of the
days until the Senior
LPGA Championship is getting into single digits! The tourney returns to The
Pete Dye Course at French Lick for a second straight year following last year’s
inaugural championship. Here’s a rundown of a few things to know and a few
things to look for:
Some of the biggest names of the game
31-time LPGA Tour
winner and seven-time major champion Juli Inkster joins this year’s field, and
Inkster is one of three World Golf Hall of Fame inductees who’ll be in action,
along with Laura Davies and Hollis Stacy.
Overall, there are
17 LPGA major winners in the field, including multi-time champs Davies (4),
Stacy (4), Jan Stephenson (3), Brandie Burton (2) and Jane Geddes (2).
Trish Johnson will also be back, defending her 2017 Senior LPGA crown.
Benefit Riley Kids
Attending the tourney means you’re getting a great value with
an even greater purpose. Tickets are $5 per day (with free parking), and
proceeds benefit Riley Children’s
Foundation and their mission of supporting families seeking help for
seriously ill and injured children.
Through Friday, October 12 at 9 p.m, you can still bid in the tournament's silent auction, also benefiting Riley — make a bid
for a Southern Indiana’s Finest Golf Package, Disney World family vacation,
sports memorabilia and more.
Amphitheaters
Holes No. 9 and 18 on The Dye Course have awesome hillside
amphitheaters are perfect for watching the entire hole. They’re ideal if you
want to park and watch in the same areas. You could see a few players under
pressure here, too, and it’s always intriguing to see how the pros tackle those
moments.
Take on Mount Airie and walk the Dye
If you’re feeling more mobile and/or ambitious, see if you
can keep up with these ladies as they trek and play one of Indiana’s most
challenging golf courses. Carved into one of Indiana’s highest elevation
points, this course equates to more of a hike than a leisurely stroll. Every
hole is worth seeing, and how many chances do you get to see a championship
golf course such as this?
See the first-ever major tournament for the senior women
golfers
This event is a big deal in senior women’s golf. There was
not a tournament outside of the Legends Tour until last year’s inaugural Senior
LPGA Championship became the first sanctioned major for women 45 and older. Now,
the USGA has started the U.S. Senior Women’s Open, bringing a second major
tourney to women’s golf. It’s pretty cool that these accomplished women are
getting the attention and recognition they deserve.
