Behind the Scenes: Volunteers Make the Golf Go 'Round

We have a community of volunteers here at French Lick Resort like none other. Our volunteers have become a part of the resort family, as some have been with us since the very first professional tournament hosted here since the resort's restoration. The Professional National Championship was hosted at The Pete Dye Course in 2010, ushering in our first crew of volunteers. Many have been involved and connected ever since.

One volunteer who's been with us since 2010 is volunteer marshal captain Mike Bolton. Mike is from Bedford, Ind., and has not missed a tournament at French Lick Resort to date.

As marshal captain, Bolton is responsible for assigning marshals to each hole who, in turn, help the players spot where their golf balls land. Bolton also makes sure all his volunteers are hydrated and comfortable while creating enjoyable memories with the people in his crew.

"I just interact with them. They're all nice people and we have a good time," Mike said.

"Everything runs pretty smoothly here. (The volunteers) are so good at what they do and they love doing this or they wouldn’t be volunteering. A lot of them are like me and have been around here so long. We look forward to it."

Volunteer marshal captain Mike Bolton (right) and volunteer marshal Bob Purlee (left) were part of the support crew at the Symetra Tour's 2018 Donald Ross Classic in July.

Mike provides a simple answer as to what keeps him coming back.

“People. Being around all these nice people. The volunteers, the staff, the players. Especially the Senior LPGA women. They are really nice and very humble. They are more than eager to be a part of the Riley charities efforts and enjoy doing so. They’re neat like that.”

Volunteer co-coordinators Wally DeFord and Larry Kidwell are behind the scenes making sure all volunteer operations run smoothly.

Likewise, those personal connections are what resonate for Wally DeFord, the volunteer co-coordinator.

“The people we work with. It’s the same ones most of the time and you get to know them really well and we just have a blast. I play golf with half of them now and we have a blast.”

If you're looking to join our volunteer family, you've got another chance coming up. The second annual Senior LPGA Championship is slated for October 11-17 at The Pete Dye Course, and we're in the process of seeking volunteers. If you'd like to be a part, visit our Senior LPGA volunteer page to get started.

Volunteers of all ages came out to help with the 2018 Donald Ross Classic.

Volunteering at French Lick has created many lifelong friendships among our volunteers. You will have the opportunity to meet new people and the players, go behind the scenes and see what it takes to run a championship event.

We commend all our volunteers for their hard work and effort, as they have been instrumental in making all our tournaments such a success. We can't wait to team up again in October for the Senior LPGA Championship!
