We have a crew out on the road hitting ten cities across the Midwest over the next four months. Kristie Smith, usually the voice behind our marketing materials, will be sharing stories along the adventure. Here is her first report from the ~~campaign~~ marketing tour.

Well, it's happening! The very first EVER French Lick Resort tour. We've hit the road and our first stop is Terre Haute, IN. The folks at the Honey Creek Mall have been very accommodating and we were able to get in early last night to get our exhibit set up. For me, we are located in heaven--smack in the middle of several jewelry stores! Can't wait to get there this morning and start sharing the resort I love with the with the fine folks of Terre Haute.

We have a great crew on hand...a few of us from marketing, a chef, a spa technician, a casino rep and more. Make sure to visit us this weekend at Honey Creek Mall to check out all the great things we have coming up at the resort and to sign-up for fun giveaways! Also we'd like to give a special shout-out to our new friends at the TGIFridays at Honey Creek. They took great care of our rather large and hungry group.

French Lick Resort Encourages Guests to "Shake Things Up this Winter"

By now holiday decorations have been stored away, thank you notes written and New Year's resolutions made. I know that I actually enjoy the downtime of January. After back-to-back commitments throughout the holidays, I appreciate having the luxury of planning something that interests me.

There is nothing better than to break open the new calendar and start daydreaming about what you can plan for the year. It gives me something to look forward to and helps get me through the gray days of winter. That is why I absolutely love that the resort is offering lots of great excuses to get out and "shake things up this winter".

Here are some of the highlights:

After a successful Winter Family Fun Fair, with those great bouncy houses, we have decided to offer a monthly version for resort guests. Your next chances to get in on the FREE fun are January 21 and February 18. A little birdie told me that they may be back for our Spring Break activities as well.

Monon Man; Ron Marquardt

I love when my job brings me across people like Ron Marquardt. Ron and I crossed paths this afternoon at the Indiana Railway Museum. He and some fellow members of the Monon Railroad Historical-Technical Society helped usher "Lynne" (a historic Monon Railroad Passenger Car) back to the depot at the Indiana Railway Museum.

Originally built by the Pullman Company in 1924, the train car has returned to French Lick where it will undergo a restoration.

The railcar in in excellent condition for being 87 years old. With the help and donations of many the car should be totally restored by late summer and go into service. The car had a total rebuild in 1987 that cost $500,000.00 so there is little to do now. The society has already restored two operating Monon cabooses in service. One at the Indiana Transportation Museum in Noblesville and one at the Indiana Railway Museum in French Lick.

This car is historic because it is one of only 3 Monon Railroad Corporate Business owned by the railroad. It was used by railroad officials to allow railroad executives to travel on the railroad to conduct business. This is the last of these cars still in available for operation. The car travel to French Lick may times and was parked in front of the hotel for railroad executives many times from 1953 to 1971.

Sometimes at the helm of the those excursions was Ron the engineer I met earlier. He had a 40 year career with Monon and the companies that followed, and occasionally he would run the train for the Kentucky Derby. He said they might have 30 or more private railcars all lined up to make the excursion to French Lick after the big race in Louisville. He vividly remembers the passengers partying until the wee hours of the night. I guess he gives new meaning to the term "designated driver."

Ron also happens to be the photo archivist for the MRHTS and promised to send along some great photos from their collection. I will be sure to share them when they arrive.

It Takes a Village

You know what it takes to decorate your house for the holidays (untangling the lights alone can be a nightmare). Now just imagine being in charge of decorations for the entire French Lick Resort! No wonder Floral Manager Kim Holland starts the process in early September.

Put it this way…even before the new stuff arrives, there are already 94 crates (4ft x 8ft) stacked floor-to-ceiling shipyard style in the warehouse just waiting for their November awakening. And Kim can tell what is inside every one. She keeps copious notes on the contents and final destination of each and every piece in her appropriately colored green folder.

Until the time comes to start placing all the holiday cheer, Kim and her elves Paig Trinkle and Janis Benner unpack the latest treasures (boxes and boxes arrive daily…just like Christmas), map out the plan to get everything up by mid-November and develop new features.

In less than three weeks, Kim and her crew (which at this point includes employees from around the resort) place and decorate some 30 Christmas trees, including the 40 ft. showpiece in the atrium of the West Baden Springs Hotel and the vintage toy themed tree out front of the French Lick Springs Hotel. Not to mention countless wreaths, miles of garland, dozens of poinsettias and plenty of bows.

Kim says after working 80 hour weeks and “not seeing her family for the month of November” she is always rewarded when she sees guests enjoying the décor. “It makes it all worthwhile.”

Great Guests, Amazing Stories=Lifetime Memories

Every day we are privileged to hear amazing stories of personal connections to the resort like the bride who just had to get married here because she has visited every year since she was five, the estranged sisters who reconnected at the resort following their father's death and the cousins who traveled from all over the country to have a family reunion. We are captivated with these stories of lifetime memories and have decided to start sharing them with you.

Our first entry is from guest blogger Steve Rondinaro a former television anchor, who has recently joined the Marketing staff. As you will see, he definitely has a knack for storytelling.

The Basore Family

One of the highlights of Memorial Day Weekend 2011 at the resort was meeting the Basore family… the whole bunch of them. I was MC’ing our games on the lawn and meandering about meeting and greeting people. I saw this gentleman wearing a World War II veteran’s hat rocking on the veranda of the hotel with his wife and engaged them in conversation.

I asked Ralph about his service and he told me of his time in the Pacific Theatre. He was in some of the toughest island fighting against the Japanese and was gracious enough to answer my many questions about that part of the war. (I’m a student of history and in awe of the men, like my father, who went off as teenage soldiers and won that war in the name of freedom.)

As we ended our conversation, I thanked the Basores for spending their Memorial Day Weekend with us. Norma quickly said, “Well we’re really here to celebrate our 65th wedding anniversary and my husband’s 89th birthday. And we brought the whole family!” Added Ralph, “We got talking about it and decided the kids could divide up the estate after we died or we could take some of the money and do something fun as a family now. We’ve always enjoyed this place and decided to share it with the whole clan. So here we are.”

I would later meet the whole clan. In fact several of them competed in one of our old-fashioned cake walks and darn if one of them didn’t win. The cake provided a fitting desert for one of their Basore family dinners.

Ralph later sent me a very special book that told the story of his time in the war. He signed it and I feel very honored to have it. I’ve made some special new friends. When Norma sent us some pictures, she included this note: “The family enjoyed our stay there so much. Such wonderful memories! And you made them even more special.”

We can't wait til the Basores come back to celebrate Ralph’s 90th birthday and their 66th anniversary!

"Old School" Sports Find a Home at French Lick Resort

Sure to be crowd-pleasers, The Vintage Base Ball World Series and the US Hickory Open Golf Tournament will entertain crowds with their throw-back style and high entertainment factor.

Vintage Base Ball World Series

First in the line-up is the Vintage Base Ball World Series to be held on the lawn of the majestic West Baden Springs Hotel July 9-10. What’s different about vintage base ball? First of all they play by the 1860 rules. What’s that mean? No glove, balls are “fair game” after the first bounce and the umpire can ask the audience their opinion in calling plays.

In the official rules book it even says …”Matches are conducted according to the highest standards of sportsmanship, gentlemanly behavior, courtesy and respect for others.“ It just sounds like a different game, doesn’t it?

Speaking of sounds…here’s a little primer on the lingo so you can follow along. In the 1800’s the field was called a playground, a batter was called a striker or a batsman and a run was called an ace.

So, what are the specifics for this year?

The roster of teams includes the Indianapolis Blues, Batesville Lumbermen, Mulberry Manglers, Indianapolis Hoosiers, St. Louis Unions, and St. Louis Perfectos. Guests can bring a lawn chair and take in the action all weekend long at the free event.

Another historic event is coming to the resort with the 4th Annual United States Hickory Open Championship being held July 11-13. The Hickory Open, which is run by the Society of Hickory Golfers, will be held on the resort’s historic Donald Ross Course.

In a Washington Post story published yesterday, columnist Fred Bowen attributes modern technology, at least in part, to the success of modern day athletes.

Rory McIlroy won the U.S. Open golf tournament last week in Bethesda by blasting his drives down the fairways an average of more than 310 yards. Forty years ago, most golfers could not hit the ball as far because some golf clubs were made of wood. Now, the drivers that golfers use are made of strong, lightweight metals such as titanium. That change in technology helps golfers hit the ball farther.

Matt Dodd, longtime hickory golfer and Society of Hickory Golfers board member says that’s exactly why he likes the crack of the old school clubs. He explains it further in this fantastic article I found on the US Hickory Open's website.

These clubs are quirky and cool and all too responsive to my actions---especially my imperfections. But I revel in the feedback I get from the clubs I play, rather than asking them to atone for the sins of my swing.

During the three-day tournament, some 70 plus golfers from around the world will compete using only wooden-shafted clubs and club heads designed prior to 1935.

The clubs won't be the only nod to the past. Participants will also don their knickers, plus fours, dress shirts and ties as a nod to the golden age of golf.

Guests are encouraged to be a part of the action. Wouldn't it be fun if everyone showed up in period attire? Now that would be a photo op!

Families Unplug, Recharge and Reconnect at French Lick Resort

There are many reasons people come to French Lick Resort – among them are to relax and rejuvenate. If you asked Lorry Meyers-Kirschner of Brookville, IN., she would throw in another “r”...rebuild.

“My only sister and I became estranged over the years due to the silly reasons that siblings find to disconnect,” said Kirschner. “However, after my father's passing, we reconnected. It was not easy (and we are still as different as night and day) but one of the greatest helps in re-establishing our relationship was a trip together to French Lick/West Baden. We are once again close, and I do give so much credit for that to the amazing surroundings there.”

In this crazy hectic world of 24/7 communication, activity-laden family calendars and never-ending to-do lists, don’t you wish sometimes you could just unplug, recharge and reconnect? Families across the Midwest are turning to French Lick Resort to spend time with the ones they love and get reacquainted.

You know it’s a good thing when teenagers will put down their phones long enough to actually spend time with their not-so-cool parents.

“We stay here often with our 15 year old daughter. I have taken her to the spa for a mani/pedi, we go to the pool, hang out watching sports in the deli, rent a bike and go for a ride, carriage ride at night, sit on the porch in the rockers...eating ice cream and reading magazines, watching movies in the room, pizza, bowling, water park, private golf lessons, driving range, etc.,” said Shari Braselton of Ellettsville, IN. “We have never had a moment of boredom and that is saying something for a teenage girl.”

Super Tips: Lawn Care Advice from a Golf Course Superintendent

Do you ever look at a golf course and say "Gee, I wish my lawn looked that good"--if so, you are not alone. Today guest blogger Russ Apple, Golf Course Superintendent at The Pete Dye Course, will share some insider tips for homeowners who are suffering from lawn envy. Take it away, Russ...

Spring has sprung and flowers are in bloom. Today's high is just 48 degrees but warmer temperatures are on tap for this weekend. If you are like most people, you will be itching to get outdoors and start cleaning up the yard. I have a few tips to help spruce up your lawn.

Assess the Situation 2010 was a hard year to grow grass in the Midwest, especially home lawns. The summer of 2010 was one of the hottest and longest we have had in many years. As fall started to roll around we cooled down, but many areas remained in drought conditions until it was too late to seed. So depending on how well you weathered 2010 will determine if you "Feel the Need, The Need To Seed."

Seeding If you had a rough year and you "Feel the Need to Seed," I recommend a blend of Turf-Type Tall Fescue and Kentucky Bluegrass(90-10 mixture by weight). Turf-Type Tall Fescue has great drought resistance and the Kentucky Bluegrass is essential for turf recovery. If you want to do spring seeding, now is the time (March thru April). At seeding, apply a starter fertilizer with an N-P-K ratio of 1-2-1. Higher amounts of Phosphorous are essential for turf establishment. Be sure to read the label and calibrate your spreader before you make any applications.

Controlling Weeds If you are seeding your lawn, you want to wait until you have mowed at least two to three times before you make any herbicide applications. The two main areas of focus for weed control are annual grasses (like crabgrass) and broadleaves (like clover and dandelion).

For annual grassy weeds, you want to make an application of a preemergence herbicide. I recommend using a fertilizer that is combined with the active ingredient dithiopyr for this application. Make this application after at least two mowings of new seedlings and before May 1. This is why it is important to seed as early as possible for spring seeding. Herbicides that have the active ingredient quinclorac can be used if you have some breakthrough of crabgrass.

When controlling broadleaves, I recommend buying a good application nozzle for your garden hose. The one I prefer allows you to use product that is in concentrated form. This provides an even application and it is cheaper to buy product in concentrated form. For hard to control weeds, look for products that contain triclopyr or fluroxpyr. It is important to read the label for rates and application instructions. The best time of year to control broadleaf weeds is late fall. If you can’t wait that long, the next best option is making applications April-June 1. Do not try to control weeds in July or August. Plant uptake is much more effective in the spring and fall.

Meet the Chefs--Paul S. Owens

Hometown: Morton, Illinois ( just 7 miles outside of Peoria, Illinois)

Current City: Mitchell, Indiana (since 1987)

First Culinary Memory: Making a birthday cake for my older sister’s boyfriend, was too literal at reading recipes and added 2 whole eggs to the batter, shells and all. Was not discovered until the cake was being eaten.

Best Job: Had the pleasure of working with my mother in both her restaurants, starting at the age of 12

Favorite thing to cook at home: Cracker crumb breaded pan fried pork chops with scorched gravy, Yukon gold mashed potatoes and green beans. It’s not necessarily my favorite thing to cook, but it will guarantee all my kids come home to eat. As a parent of 7 children, there is no finer feeling than having all your kids home at once around the dining table.

Tell us about your family: I have seven children, six daughters and one son. I worked way too much for the older three or four daughters to experience cooking with Dad. However, as I’ve moved on in my career and am more stable in the hours I work, the youngest two daughters have learned a lot over the last few years. My 17 year old son has no interest in cooking as long as there is fair warning as to when to be present for dinner.(oh, and you have to generally wake him up first)

Funniest/worst culinary experience: Funny now, but horrifying when it happened. I was 17 and was helping in the kitchen at a university in Illinois, and the university was hosting the Illinois governors ball. I was asked to check on the Vichyssoise, ( a very creamy, potato and leek soup). As I located the soup, I noticed that it was stone cold. No way was I going to have the evening ruined by serving cold soup! I cranked the heat under both steam kettles promptly and careful not to scorch the creation, had it at 160 degrees just minutes before the wait staff came back to serve. Disaster averted, right? Wrong! Vichyssoise is ONLY served cold. I have never seen, to this day, a chef get so mad and turn so red with anger. The veins in his neck and forehead were massive. He cursed in German for at least a half hour. This man made Gordon Ramsay look like a school girl. I still must say!

Easiest Recipe to Wow Your Friends:Crème Brulee

Ingredients
• 1 quart heavy cream
• 1 vanilla bean, split and scraped
• 1 cup vanilla sugar, divided
• 6 large egg yolks
• 2 quarts hot water

Directions
Preheat the oven to 325 degrees F.

Place the cream, vanilla bean and its pulp into a medium saucepan set over medium-high heat and bring to a boil. Remove from the heat, cover and allow to sit for 15 to 20 minutes. Remove the vanilla bean from the cream.

In a medium bowl, whisk together 1/2 cup sugar and the egg yolks until well blended and it just starts to lighten in color. Add the cream a little at a time, stirring continually. Pour the liquid into 6 (7 to 8-ounce) ramekins. Place the ramekins into a large cake pan or roasting pan. Pour enough hot water into the pan to come halfway up the sides of the ramekins.

Bake just until the creme brulee is set, but still shaky in the center, approximately 40 to 45 minutes. Remove the ramekins from the roasting pan and refrigerate for at least 2 hours and up to 3 days.

Remove the brulee from the refrigerator for at least 30 minutes prior to browning the sugar on top. Divide the remaining 1/2 cup vanilla sugar equally among the 6 dishes and spread evenly on top. Using a torch, melt the sugar and form a crispy top. Allow the creme brulee to sit for at least 5 minutes before serving

French Lick to Debut Private Selection Woodford Reserve Bourbon

When you compare histories, French Lick Resort and Woodford Reserve Distillery have a lot in common: both started in the mid 1800’s, boast a National Historic Landmark and both are enjoyed best at a slow and relaxing pace.

It’s no wonder, we jumped at the chance to develop a small batch private label bourbon with the folks from Woodford.Master Distiller Chris Morris invited the French Lick team to the heart of Bluegrass Country to tour the distillery and take part in creating the unique blend. Morris walked the team through the process to help them identify characteristics of eight specially-selected barrels distilled between 1991 and 2004.

After noting the characteristics of each selection, the group chose the flavor components that would become the distinctive French Lick Select Woodford Reserve Bourbon. Food & Beverage Manager Thomas O’Connor noted, “The flavor profile is predominantly citrus with a hint of honeysuckle and a touch of toasted marshmallow sweetness.”

The premium bourbon will be revealed during a special SOLD-OUT Woodford Reserve Dinner on Thursday, October 14 in the hotel’s signature restaurant, 1875: The Steakhouse.

1875: The Steakhouse Chef Zack Hill has created a special five- course dinner, using fresh local ingredients, to complement the bourbon.The meal will begin with an appetizer of Smoked Shrimp drizzled in spicy herbed tomato and bourbon coulis. Next, guests will enjoy a Yellow Tomato and Pepper Bisque served alongside herbed Bourbon Bread grilled cheese featuring Kenny’s Farmhouse Cheeses. The salad selection will feature an Arugula Caesar Salad with whole grain mustard and bourbon dressing. For the main entrée, guests will have a choice of an 8 oz. Bourbon Herb Marinated Filet Mignon or an Oven- roasted Duck Breast with bourbon Lingonberry sauce. Bourbon is even featured in the dessert; Chef Zach created a Persimmon Pecan Cookie with pumpkin gelato and vanilla bourbon air.

72 Days til PGA Championship at French Lick

As we gear up for our first PGA Championship since opening the Dye Course, I thought I would share this feature story.

A new chapter in the illustrious history of the French Lick Resort will unfold June 27-30, as one of America’s historic and premier golf destinations hosts the 43rd PGA Professional National Championship.

The competition for 312 of the nation’s best PGA professionals will be staged on the resort’s new Pete Dye Course and the timeless classic Donald Ross Course.

Situated atop the rolling hills overlooking the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana, French Lick Resort has been an integral part of golf history since the 1917 when the Ross course opened, elevating the resort and the town of French Lick onto the national golf scene.

Although the resort has hosted several national championships, this event marks the first time the national championship for PGA professionals will be contested in Indiana. At stake for the professionals are the Walter Hagen trophy and a $500,000 purse. The event is sponsored by industry mainstays, Titleist, FootJoy, Cobra; and Club Car.

Golfers from around the Midwest and the country will be able to watch the event as all four days of competition will be televised live by the Golf Channel.

French Lick Resort’s first experience at hosting a major championship was in 1924 when the PGA Championship was held on The Donald Ross course. The event was won by the legendary Walter Hagen whose name adorns the crystal cup that will be presented to the PGA professional national champion.

The Donald Ross Course, designed of course by the famed Scottish architect, also hosted the 1959 and 1960 LPGA Championship. It was the home of the Midwest Amateur from the 1930s through the 1950s. Coincidentally, Pete Dye captured the 1957 Midwest Amateur on the course.

What makes this national championship unique is that players will face a combination of two great challenging, yet completely different layouts. Players will tee off on the par-70, 6,885-yard Donald Ross Course that opened in 1917, and on the par-72, 7,174-yard Pete Dye Course, which debuted 82 years later in the spring of 2009. The Championship’s final two rounds will be on the Pete Dye Course. The championship will mark the first time that a national tournament has been played on two courses designed by two Hall of Fame architects.

“I think you have the best of both worlds challenging some of the best golfers in the country,” said Dave Harner, director of golf at French Lick Resort. “You have the great classic course architect, Donald Ross, with his challenging green complexes and parkland layout. Then you have Pete Dye, who is without a doubt the most noted of the modern day architects with his challenging design aspects both visually and shot making.”

Dye said the two courses will play as different as any two courses he has ever seen as far as shot value and playability.

“The Ross course is really up and down and you will get a lot of shots where you can’t see the surface of the green, you’ll see the top of the pin, and you never get a flat lie over there,” he said. “Our course up on top has a tremendous change of elevation but the fairways are not flat but they are not rolling off like on the Ross.”

Adjusting to the difference in the grass on the fairways and the contours of the greens will also be a challenge. Some of the greens on the Ross course slope eight feet from back to front, there is Bermuda grass on the fairways and bent grass on the greens, Dye said.

”The speed of the greens will be 100 per cent different between both courses,” he said. “The superintendent will have those greens on our courses playing so fast it will scare you to death. Playing off short cut bent fairways on top of the hill and Bermuda on the Ross will make the approach shots completely different than rolling it up on bent grass. It will be fun to see because there has never been a contrast like that in the game of golf at a tournament of that magnitude.”

Dye said the difference in wind on his course will also be a major factor.

“I’m really thrilled with the long views and ambience of the scenery up on our course is pretty dramatic from all directions on all tees fairways and greens. But when you factor its up 800 feet, and when the wind comes out of Kansas its going to blow up there pretty good.”

Local Indiana PGA Professionals are very excited about the challenge they will face in June.

Todd Smith, from Peru Indiana and nine-time Indiana PGA Player of the Year, is excited about playing in his home state. Last August, Smith captured the Indiana PGA Championship on the Pete Dye Course.

“I don’t know if local knowledge will play a big factor in this championship,” said Smith. “These two golf courses (Donald Ross and Pete Dye) are all about hitting good shots. The nice thing is that all of us Indiana players don’t have to travel as far and we are familiar with the area.”

“I haven’t played any golf course as difficult as the Pete Dye Course that I thought was that fair rewarding good shots and penalizing poor shots. The golf courses are extremely scenic and are always in perfect condition. The green sites on both courses are very difficult. The winner of this championship will be a very good iron player. If you miss your shots into the green in the wrong places you will pay the price. The Pete Dye Course is the best golf course I have ever played.”

Smith will also be joined by five other Indiana PGA members, one of whom receives an automatic exemption – 1984 National Champion Bill Schumaker of Columbia City, Ind., who at age 60 is making his 29th appearance, a Championship record.

For Schumaker, who has played 85 rounds in the national championship, the Pete Dye Course is “phenomenal.”

“There’s no other course like it in Indiana, that’s for sure,” said Schumaker, the PGA head professional since 1977 at Crooked Lake Golf Course in Columbia City. “I think that it’s neat to see the National Championship coming to Indiana. I didn’t think that it would ever get to Indiana. I know that the resort and the Section will put their respective best foot forward to make it special.”

Many critics say Dye’s French Lick creation is one of the most breathtaking and exciting golf courses in the country. The course was carefully carved into a dramatic hilltop, one of the highest points in Indiana. It offers a variety of elevation changes, rugged and dramatic terrain, narrow fairways, and challenging bunkers. The course offers spectacular views stretching more than 40 miles from every hole.

Dye said the property is as good for golf as any he has worked on.“I have spent the past five decades designing golf courses all over the world, including courses on great coastal sites,” Dye explains. “This new course at French Lick Resort has brought great excitement to Alice and me because the course is on arguably the best inland site I have ever worked on.”

Bring on the Bubbly..French Lick Resort Hosts Korbel Photo Shoot

We have been fortunate enough to have some pretty cool photo and video shoots on property over the past few years. So, when the fine folks at PriceWeber asked if they could use French Lick Resort as a backdrop for Korbel’s next print ad campaign, we said certainly!

With the ability to shoot anywhere in the world, why did Korbel choose French Lick? Robert Trinkle, PriceWeber Account Supervisor, said it best, “Shooting here made perfect sense for us. There are so many unique and romantic venues in one place. We are able to shoot a variety of different looks without having to travel outside of the resort.”

The three-day photo shoot kicked off yesterday at the West Baden Springs Hotel. There are a series of vignettes including a cocktail party, girlfriend getaway and, of course, wedding shots.

Although not couples in “real life”, the models did a good job of fooling West Baden guests. Many onlookers thought they were couples actually tying the knot.

It wasn't the first time Ohio-based models Melissa Scalia and Justin Korn were “married” for the sake of advertising. Check out the couple in a recent ad for Pringles and in this behind-the-scenes shot from yesterday. I loved hanging out with the group that included models from across the country and beyond. Poor Natalia Komissarova (who is actually from Ukraine) didn’t even arrive until 2 a.m. the night before.

You would never know it from this early morning photo (That’s her in the silver dress). Also in the photo are Anji Corley, a radio personality from D.C. and Tom O’Connell originally from nearby Louisville, Ky.

It was fun to see the whole production come together. I learned all kinds of tricks-of-the-trade including how they make the champagne look its best for photos and other random things that make multiple "takes" possible.

For instance, this set-up called for the model to toss her bouquet of the balcony.

What you don’t see off-camera is model Nate Switzer catching it four floors below.

Nate then hands it off to Joe Humphrey who puts it in the bucket to be hoisted back up to the balcony.

The entire group has been really great to work with and a lot of fun. I can't wait to see the final product and when I do, I can say "Hey, I was there!"

Magical Martinis Under the Dome

I had just heard about this new book called The Two Martini Diet: How I Lost 100+ lbs While Eating Well and Having a Drink. and then the meeting request came in "Martini Tasting at the West Baden Springs Hotel." Did I read that right? Heck ya, count me in on that meeting!

You better bet I showed up at the hotel last night at 5 o'clock on the dot. The promise (ha ha) of losing weight and enjoying some libations sounded like a win-win to me.

Okay, I guess I should include some disclaimer about how West Baden's new Martini menu has not reviewed by the Food & Drug Administration and we cannot say that a two-martini-a-day diet during your stay will result in any significant weight loss. However, I can say the new assortment of colorful concoctions are quite tasty.

Just ask my fellow colleagues who were also "forced" into sampling the dozen new selections. Amanda Hawkins Vogel, VP of Operations gave her top vote to the Caribbean Gold Martini featuring Malibu Rum, Banana Liqueur and OJ.

Ted, the traditionalist, ordered his favorite, the Dirty Martini. A classic, for sure, but Ted this is about all the new drinks.

When pushed on the matter, Ted agrees with me that the new West Baden Signature Martini was the best. I do have to admit that I was originally drawn to it because of its pretty blue color but one sip confirmed it tasted as good as it looked. Warning: This one packs a punch with the super-premium 1800 Tequila.

Other interesting selections include the Apple Pie, Kentucky Mint and Key Lime. For the full menu, stop in at West Baden and ask to see the dozen, or so, options now available.

Culinary Champions Event to Showcase Midwest Professionals

I am really excited about our next Culinary Classic coming up April 24 at French Lick Resort featuring well-known chefs (and a mixologist) from Louisville, Bloomington, Indianapolis, Cincinnati and Nashville . To play on the resort’s history, we have developed a theme of “Classics Reinvented.”

Below is the list of participating chefs and a little bit about them. They will each teach a cooking class and prepare a course for the evening’s dinner. The classes are $30 each or $120 for all. Dinner is $50 per person or $160 for both the classes and the dinner.

Molly Wellman (Cincinnati)- Cocktails

Joe Shaw (Nashville)- Salad

Dave Tallent (Bloomington)- Soup

John Varanese (Louisville)- Fourth Course- entrée

John is the Executuve Chef/Owner of the contemporary Mediterranean restaurant by the same name. He is one of the hottest chefs in Louisville and continues to get accolades for his restaurant he describes as having "five-star ambiance with three-star prices.

Frederic de Villeneuve (Indianapolis)- Fifth Course- Dessert

Frederic de Villeneuve has been the pastry chef at Ghyslain Chocolatier in Union City since 2003. Ghyslain uses the finest imported and domestic ingredients and incorporates the artisan touch of handcrafting some of the finest pastries you can find anywhere.

Hot Glass on a Cold Winter Night

Louisville has always been a good market for us both on the leisure side and for group sales. We are lucky to have Sales Manager Michele Bowling working that area for us and when clients can't make it the resort, she brings it to them.

Such was the case on Thursday, February 11th when Michele hosted a French Lick Resort cocktail reception at Glassworks in downtown Louisville. The timing was perfect...there had been snow earlier in the week...but by Thursday everyone was ready to be out and about.

The event was held in a beautiful space next to the gallery and overlooking the glassblowing studio. I have always been fascinated with glassblowing and this event confirmed that even more.

Four lucky guests had the chance to work with one of the resident glass blowing artisans to "Blow Their Sweetheart a Kiss!" Wouldn't you know it..I, of course, was not eligible since I work for the resort. Darn!

Our lucky winners were Michelle Harper of Distillers Grain Technology, Andrea Eisert & Jamie Kamin, both of Humana and Gayla Shaftlein of the Louisville CVB. The ladies designed and created their own keepsake "kiss."

Five Questions with...French Lick Resort Chef Robbie Bellew

In our first installment of “Five Questions with”.... I would like to introduce you to Banquets/Catering Chef Robbie Bellew.

The Long Beach Mississippi native set out to get a degree in law enforcement but ended up trading handcuffs for kitchen shears after a class trip to the local jail. “I saw the faces of the people working there and they did not seem happy. That got me thinking what makes you happy? I, of course, was eating at the time."

A three -year culinary apprenticeship at Walt Disney World sealed the deal. “I experienced around 30 different venues while there. I worked everything from a hot dog cart to fine dining. It was truly a priceless experience.” Robbie also met his wife Carrie during his days at Disney. She was in the character department and would play Miss Piggy and Eeyore.

After Disney Robbie spent some time close to home at the Grand Casino in Gulfport, MS before moving to the Hoosier state to take a job with Caesars Indiana.

All it took was one trip to French Lick for Robbie to fall in love. “I made the drive out (one hour) and was very shocked when I arrived. It was amazing to see the caliber of this resort. I quickly fell in love with it. The decision was easy. I have been with the resort since July 2007.”

What’s your first culinary memory?
I am sure we all remember some of our first experiences with food. I fondly remember Christmas Eve at my Grandmother’s (I called her Amaw because I could not pronounce Grandma) house. Everyone would go to her house and celebrate the family Christmas. She would make her gumbo and divinity. This Gumbo was fantastic and truly heartwarming. The divinity was out of this world. She would make plain, pecan and peanut butter flavored. The recipe she used was passed along to me and I have yet to make it the same way she did. I guess I need that old General Electric hand mixer to do the job right.

Favorite thing to cook at home?
I love to cook outdoors. I have a smoker and a Weber grill. I guess it’s the primal caveman in me that loves cooking over hot coals. I have recently been getting to know several chefs in the competition BBQ world. This is quickly becoming a passion of mine. I just need to get the equipment to feed that passion, and the neighborhood!

Funniest culinary experience during your career?
I have several funny stories that could fill a book some day. I was working for the MGM Studios at WDW. This was 1991. The park was closed for the World Premier of Beauty and the Beast. We had the streets of the park set to resemble scenes from the movie. I was put on a carving station and they gave me Lamb to carve. The funny part was the carving station was placed in a barnyard scene with live animals placed all around me. I entered the station and had to shake my head as I was cutting a cooked lamb while looking at a live one. The cool thing is I was able to serve Robby Benson, Angela Lansbury and David Ogden Stiers (Major Charles Winchester from MASH)

What’s your favorite aspect of the job?
I love teaching others the craft of cooking. It used to be the stigma that chefs kept secrets. I have a belief that chefs should pass along everything they know so the strength of the culinary community grows.

Anything quirky/different/just plain weird you want to share???
I was also asked to prepare the food for Luciano Pavarotti. Before you start saying OOOOO and AHHHHH…He was on a very strict diet. I made the following:
• Steamed unseasoned chicken breast
• Steamed Broccoli- unseasoned
• Steamed white rice- unseasoned
• Sliced lemon

That’s it. I prepared the food and brought it to the backstage area. I handed it off to one of his managers and then joined my wife for the show. By the way he was incredible! I hope he got some nourishment from the food. I know he could not have enjoyed it.

This has been just an astounding week for Golf at French Lick Resort!!! We learned at the end of last week that the Pete Dye Course at French Lick had been awarded the Best New Public Course in America by Golf Digest. This was an honor we really aspired to gain. The course certainly was the most anticipated new opening in 09, as well as one of the most controversial from an architectural standpoint. This kind of rave review is exactly what our paying guests were telling us throughout the season.

Fast forward to today, only 5 days later, we received notice that we now have been awarded BEST NEW COURSE YOU CAN PLAY for 2009 by GOLF magazine! We never anticipated this one but it is certainly a pleasant surprise!!

Pete Dye is an amazing individual. He is, as he puts it, “half a hundred and sixty eight” years old and still going strong. The Digest award marks the 5th time one of Pete’s courses have won the prestigious honor, albeit he had not claimed the honor in 10 years. ‘Tis the season to win big at French Lick Resort! Lady Luck definitely made her appearance known when five of the casino’s top jackpots were hit in one week. Two lucky players are $100,000 richer, just in time for Christmas while the Camaro 2SS, Ford Mustang and Harley Davidson jackpots were also awarded.

“It’s always exciting to pay out a jackpot,” said Brian Marsh, Vice President of Casino Operations. “It’s even more rewarding to pay out so many in such a short time-frame, especially during the holiday season when it’s better to give than receive.”

Terry D. from Bloomington, IN. began the lucky streak on Sunday, Nov. 29 by winning over $110,000 at a two cent Triple Double Diamond progressive machine near the entrance of the casino.

Big winnings continued into the following weekend when the remaining four jackpots were awarded. On Friday, Dec. 4, Edna S. from New Salisbury, IN. took home to the top prize of over $103,000 on the $5 Triple Dollars progressive machine in the high limit area. Just 30 minutes later, Carolyn M. from Bedford, IN. won the Harley Davidson Jackpot on a two cent Triple Double Stars machine.

On Saturday, back-to-back jackpots were once again paid out within an hour of each other. Richard S. from Jasper, IN. will end 2009 in luxury by cruising around in his new 2010 Ford Mustang. Richard won his new ride by playing a two cent Super Times Pay Machine in the non-smoking area. Eddye G. from Cloverport, KY. was also the big winner of the 2010 Camaro 2SS Jackpot on a two cent Double Dollars slot.

Fall is on its way

On my way into French Lick Resort this morning, I saw the first glimpse of fall in the tree tops of the Hoosier National Forrest.

I love this time of year when the hills of Southern Indiana transform into a sea of yellow, red and orange. This area's dense tree lines make it an ideal place to take in the wide spectrum of color, which usually is at its peak mid-to-late October.

The Indiana Office of State Tourism offers Leaf Cams every year. One of the five throughout the state is atop the Pete Dye Course. They should be flipping the switch soon and turning them on.

There are so many options for guests wanting to experience autumn's magic in the French Lick/West Baden area. I like to say you can see it by rail, trail or sail.

The Indiana Railway Museum offers a 20-mile train ride with one of the best views. You can sit back, relax and take in the changing landscape of color.

For those looking for a more active approach, you can take advantage of some of the area’s great trails. There are plenty of options there too: hiking, biking, even horseback riding.

The fall foliage boat tours on Patoka Lake are another guest favorite. The sight-seeing excursions on the 8,800 acre man-made lake, just a few miles from the French Lick Resort, are offered regularly throughout the month of October. A bonus with this option is you may just get the chance to see one of the recently hatched bald eagle chicks.

Any way you choose, you simply must see Southern Indiana in the fall.

French Lick Resort Announces Finalists for Classic Rock Band Battle
Live first round performances begin August 14 in Casino

FRENCH LICK, Ind. (August 12, 2009) – A battle of the bands returns to French Lick Resort this Friday when 16 bands representing Indiana, Kentucky, Illinois and Ohio “duke it out” for French Lick Resort’s Classic Rock Band Battle. The 16 finalists include OGR (Louisvlle, KY), The Unknown (Bedford, IN), Rusted River (Mitchell, IN), Dame’s Rocket (Springville, IN), The Emeralds (Cincinnati, OH), Jeff Randal and the Sunday Best (Scotland, IL), King Cave (Corydon, IN), Compass Rose (Bloomington, IN), Tattoo Babylon (Louisville, KY), Empty Fifth (Louisville, KY), KTO (Louisville, KY), Limited Slip (Mitchell, IN), Windfall (Dayton, OH), Seize the Day (Shepherdsville, KY), The Rock Show (Bedford, IN) and Cockeyed Clyde (Indianapolis, IN).

The action gets started Aug. 14, 15, 21 and 22 with the first round of dueling events. A full schedule of round one is included below. Four bands will compete nightly with the winner of each pairing going on to round two. Scheduled for August 28 and 29, round two will feature the eight remaining bands.

Four semi-finalists will perform on Sept 12. The competition will come full circle on Sept. 19 when a panel of judges picks the big winner.

Fans and supporters, 21 and over, are encouraged to attend the casino performances since bands are judged by crowd applause until the final round.

For the finale, the two remaining bands will go head-to-head in the Windsor Ballroom. The winning band will receive $7,500 cash prize, while the runner-up receives $2,500.

Preliminary round performances are free for casino guests. Tickets for the final showdown are $10 and may be purchased at the Hoosier Sugar Company in the French Lick Springs Hotel, on Ticketforce or at the door the night of the show.

10k Classic Rock Band Challenge

After the rousing success of the 10k Country Band Challenge (where The Clayton Anderson Band was the big winner) French Lick Resort has decided to keep the battle of the bands going and mix things up a bit with some rock n’ roll. The 10k Classic Rock Band Challenge is next on the play list and the entry deadline is fast approaching.

Groups have until July 31 to get in on the month-long competition and vie for the $7,500 first place cash prize. The runner-up will be awarded $2,500.
Bands are encouraged to submit a CD or DVD to the resort with a photo or to upload a video onto YouTube.

The deadline for entries is July 31 and the 16 finalists will be announced on August 4. The finalists will perform live on the casino stage for 30 minutes on weekends August 14-September 12. Fans and supporters, 21 and over, are encouraged to be at the casino during the performances. Judges will take crowd response into consideration when making their decision. The final round is scheduled for September 19 in the resort’s Windsor Ballroom.

There is a $4 cover charge for the preliminary round performances in the casino lounge. Tickets for the final showdown are $10 and may be purchased at the Hoosier Sugar Company in the French Lick Springs Hotel, on Ticketforce or at the door the night of the show.

Clayton Anderson Band wins French Lick Resort's $10k Country Band Challenge

The Clayton Anderson Band (Bloomington, Ind.) is ten grand richer after beating out Seymour, Ind.’s Tator in the finals of French Lick Resort's 10k Country Band Challenge. Both bands gave it their all and entertained the crowd with show-stopping performances Saturday night in the resort’s Windsor Ballroom. Celebrity judges Randall Hamm (Q100 radio), Kelly G (WBKR radio) and Carrie Weil (WAVE3-TV) scored the bands in ten different categories including stage presence, musicianship, vocals, audience involvement, song selection, arrangements, diction, ensemble, originality and marketability. It was a tight competition with only 17 points separating The Clayton Anderson Band from runner-up Tator.

Saturday’s finals were the culmination of three weeks of great performances by bands representing Indiana, Kentucky and Ohio. New KidsFest Clubhouse Open at French Lick Resort

The new KidsFest Clubhouse has made its debut just in time for Spring Break guests. French Lick regulars may recognize the building from its former life as the Pro Shop for the Valley Course.

Located out front of the French Lick Springs Hotel, (on the end near the event center) the building makes the perfect setting for a pint-size hangout.

Kids can drop in for open play or to meet up for one of the Experiences. The Experiences, which are 2-3 hour group activities, are kid-tested and mother approved.

With “fluffy, melt-in-your mouth biscuits," Mary’s Breakfast Nook (Hardinsburg, Ind.) took home top honors in French Lick Resort’s Sausage Gravy & Biscuits Competition.

Held during the resort’s Country Cooking Festival, the competition pitted local restaurants against each other in the quest for the best breakfast favorite.

A panel of judges including, Executive Chef Brian Schack, sampled the entries and decided that Mary’s had the best combination of flavors, texture and heat.

Vintage Base Ball at West Baden

Vintage Base Ball is definitely a throwback to simpler times. The obvious absence of gloves, hand-drawn diamonds in the grass and those really cool retro uniforms make Vintage Base Ball (originally it was two words) a lot of fun.

Nearly 500 spectators came out to the West Baden Springs Hotel lawn last April to see a double-header between the Cincinnati Buckeyes and the Indianapolis Blues.

This year the event has been expanded to include six teams from the Midwest. Participating teams are: Cincinnati Buckeyes, Cincinnati Red Stockings, Batesville (IN) Lumbermen, Indianapolis Blues, Indianapolis Hoosiers and St. Louis (MO) Unions.

The tournament is scheduled for June 27-28 and will include a total of nine games, starting at 9:30 a.m. on Saturday morning. The champions will be determined Sunday afternoon.

Mark your calendars now and make plans for your family to attend. The games are absolutely free. We’ll have bleachers (or feel free to bring your own lawn chair), concessions and even some Vintage Base Ball souvenirs.

Back from Florida: Snow Still on the Dye Course

I thought by heading to the PGA Merchandise Show in Orlando last week I missed all the snow. But with snow again this morning, it looks like it’s going be around for awhile. I have to say I did enjoy the near perfect weather in Florida.

While we were there, we co-sponsored a media event at Legacy Club in Longwood, Florida. Pete and Alice Dye were our special guests. We had a chance to promote the opening of the Dye Course in April to the group of over 100 people. Pete took questions from the media and then spent some one-on-one time with journalists. Excitement for his course at French Lick is definitely starting to build.

Both Pete and Alice played in the tournament and had a great time. It was good to get out on the course and hit a few balls even if the company was better than my score.

While at the show, we were able to find some great new ideas for the golf shops as well. You will see all of those when you visit this season. Look forward to seeing you soon!

The Pete Dye Course at French Lick Resort Will Join America’s Best

Not since the opening of Whistling Straits in Wisconsin has there been a more anticipated golf course opening in the Midwest and Hall of Fame architect Pete Dye is responsible for both. The new Pete Dye course at French Lick Resort will open to the public on April 24, 2009.

French Lick Resort, long one of America’s premier resort destinations, is situated on rolling hills overlooking the Hoosier National Forest in southern Indiana. The historic resort is located in the small town of French Lick, where for over two centuries the Pluto Mineral Springs has attracted visitors. (It is also known as the hometown of basketball legend Larry Bird.)

Soon the town will be known as one of the great golf destinations in the country. Since the early 1900’s, golf has been an integral part of this resort area. Tom Bendelow designed the first course here in 1907 followed by the great Donald Ross ten years later. In 2009, however, French Lick moves to an entirely new level with the opening of the spectacular new Pete Dye course.

Dye, an Indiana native who recently was inducted into the Golf Hall of Fame, is famous for his innovative course designs. In 1982, Dye introduced stadium golf at TPC Sawgrass in Florida. What followed were a series of Dye signature designs including the Ocean Course at Kiawah, PGA West in California, Whistling Straits in Wisconsin and now this new course at French Lick Resort.

“I have spent the past five decades designing golf courses all over the world, including courses on great coastal sites,” Dye explains. “This new project at French Lick Resort brings great excitement to Alice and me because the course is on arguably the best inland site I have ever worked on.”

Those who have previewed the design say that Dye has created one of the most breathtaking and exciting 18 holes of golf in the country. The course was carefully carved on a dramatic hilltop offering a variety of elevation changes, rugged and dramatic terrain, narrow fairways and ever-changing bunkers. There are spectacular views from every hole, some that stretch for over 40 miles.

Integrating the advances in modern equipment, golf balls and player fitness, Dye has designed a golf course that stretches over 8,100 yards from the professional tees. However, this new creation welcomes all levels of players. With five sets of tees, yardages begin at 5,100 yards from the forward tees. (Alice Dye always makes sure the courses play well for women.) Most players are expected to play from either 6,100 or 6,700 yards.

This new course is already gaining national recognition. In 2010, the PGA of America will play its PGA Professional National Championship on the new Pete Dye course. This is expected to be the first of several high profile professional events to be hosted here.

The new Pete Dye course will also mark the return of caddies to French Lick Resort for the first time in 45 years. The resort’s new caddie program will give young people from the area the opportunity to learn the game and qualify for college scholarships. The resort will work with the Western Golf Association in developing the caddie program. While caddies will be an option, forecaddies will be required upon opening.

Complementing the new Pete Dye course at French Lick Resort is the historic Donald Ross course, which has just undergone a $4.6 million restoration project that has brought the course back to Ross’s original plans.

French Lick is now the only resort in the world that combines the classic history of Donald Ross and the modern day design of the legendary Pete Dye. This combination is a spectacular opportunity for golfers to experience two of the best designers who ever shaped beautiful landscapes into golf courses.

What’s French Lick Resort you ask? Vintage modern is the best way to describe this destination resort tucked in the quaint Southern Indiana town of French Lick. The amazing atrium with its 200 foot dome ranks right up there with the great domes of the world. In fact, the dome was the largest free span dome before the Astrodome was built.
