French Lick Resort Tells its History One Step at a Time

I have always been fascinated by the people and places that have come before us. So imagine my delight when I was fortunate enough to land this job as Public Relations Manager for the historic French Lick Resort.
I immediately began to research everything I could about the history of these two resort towns. Some seven years later, I am still learning. A week doesn't go by without a new discovery - be it from a book, long-term employee or even a guest. Just this week, author James Vaughn showed up at my office with what we are now affectionately calling the "Encyclopedia of West Baden."

I will never claim to be the official historian; I'll leave that to the experts like Mr. Vaughn and Indiana Landmarks Program Manager Sandi Woodward, who is my "phone-a-friend" for anything and everything about the resort's history.
Walking Tour Brochure
However, I am thrilled to have been a part of a new self-guided historical walking tour that was just unveiled at the resort.

You can simply pick up a historical walking tour map from either hotel concierge desk and set off on a journey to explore the resort’s 3,000 acres. By following the on-property marquees, you can trace the histories of both French Lick Springs Hotel and West Baden Springs Hotel.

You’ll learn how the “magical mineral waters” started it all, attracted the rich and famous to The Valley and even helped win a World Series! That’s not all - the tour will also cover boxing, baseball and The Big Top.

Historic Displays on property
Nearly 30 different historic markers share stories of early settlers, the development of the health resort, sports connections and more.

Indiana Landmarks will continue to offer their 70-minute guided tours daily. The volunteer-led experiences delve deeper into the resort’s history and recent renaissance. The tours are offered at the West Baden Springs Hotel at 10 am, 2pm and 4pm while French Lick Springs Hotel offers

one at noon.
