Day tripping; Spring Mill State Park

Great location for a daytrip from French Lick

I was driving down Hwy 37 this morning when I thought, it's such a beautiful day...I should stop at Spring Mill State Park and take some photos. Just a short half hour drive from the French Lick Resort, the state park is a fun (and educational) experience your whole family will enjoy. There is plenty to do in and around the 1,300 acres including the Grissom Memorial, bike rentals, nature trails and more.

My favorite part is the restored Pioneer Village with over 20 log cabin structures dating back to the early 1800’s.  A photographer's dream, the Village has plenty of photo ops from the primitive buildings, to a picturesque creek and of course, the working Grist Mill. Interpreters are stationed throughout the buildings to share a bit about what life was like in 1832 when Hugh and Thomas Hamer acquired the property.

The park offers plenty of great picnic spot (some shelters even have grills and bathroom facilities). I would recommend you stop in Paoli at the Lost River Market & Deli (just off the square) to pick-up a sack lunch that you can enjoy in the great outdoors.

Lost River Market is a full-service natural market featuring fresh, local foods, including a great selection of regional beers, wines and cheeses plus fair-trade coffees and chocolates. You can enjoy homemade hot soups (the tomato bisque is incredible), a delectable salad bar and fresh-made deli sandwiches daily. I personally think they make an incredible chicken salad but I can honestly say all of their sandwich and wraps are delicious!

The market is conveniently located one block Northeast of Paoli downtown square and is open seven days a week.
